Test Facility Profile & Cost Guideline

Whether you’re considering a new installation, or enhancing an existing one, preliminary material testing will help to ensure the long-term success and performance of your system.  In our state-of-theart test facility, your material is handled, conveyed, or blended to best simulate actual field conditions.  As a result, we are able to reliably determine rate, degradation, air consumption, efficiency, material flow characteristics, etc.   

Nol-Tec Systems has the ability to perform the following tests:

  • Material Characteristic testing to define bulk density, particle size, moisture content, etc.
  • Dense Phase Pressure Conveying utilizing a transport vessel
  • Dense Phase Vacuum Conveying utilizing a surge hopper and a vacuum blower or pump
  • Dilute Phase Pressure Conveying utilizing a rotary airlock, screw feeder, or an eductor
  •  Dense Phase Pressure Conveying utilizing a mini-jet transporter
  • Dilute Phase Vacuum Conveying utilizing a rotary airlock or screw feeder
  • Semi-Dense Pressure Conveying utilizing a screw pump
  • Pneumatic Blending (dry and/or wet) – Nol-Tec Model 244 Blender
  • Bulk Bag Unloading (4,000-pound maximum)
  • Air Activated Gravity Conveyor Metering or Transferring
  • Material Flow utilizing Nol-Tec Model 328 aerating bin bottom   

All Nol-Tec test equipment is fabricated of mild steel construction (except the vacuum feed hopper which is fabricated of aluminum). Test equipment is thoroughly cleaned prior to each customer test. 

TEST MATERIAL REQUIREMENTS

A Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) is required for each and every material prior to arrival at Nol-Tec Systems. An MSDS must also be attached to each shipping container. Test material freight costs to and from Nol-Tec are the responsibility of the customer.  Nol-Tec cannot accept collect shipments for test materials unless pre-approved.  If return freight arrangements are not made by the customer, material will be returned freight collect via a shipping company selected by Nol-Tec. 

The minimum amount of material required for testing is as follows:

Dense Phase: The equivalent of two (2) 55-gallon drums of each material to be tested.  This applies to transporter (pressure), screw pump and mini-jet testing.

Dense Phase Vacuum testing requires the equivalent of  one (1) 55-gallon drum of each material to be tested. 

Dilute Phase: The equivalent of one (1) 55-gallon drum of each material to be tested.  This applies to vacuum pressure and eductor testing.  

Blending: Suggested batch size is 25 cu.ft. with a minimum of 10 cu.ft.

A test report is prepared upon completion of each test and made available for customer review. The report includes data such as air usage, conveying rate, system settings, blend pressure, etc.  Test samples can be collected and retained for customer analysis. In addition, a video of the test can be provided upon prior customer request.  

DENSE PHASE CONVEYING with TRANSPORTER

The test material is manually loaded into a 10 cubic foot transporter which has a 60° cone and aeration jets.  Aeration in the transporter cone consists of up to 14 jets. Typically, only two (2) to six (6) jets are needed, depending on the material being tested.  The material is conveyed to a 50 cubic foot receiving bin, which contains integral dust filter cartridge elements.  In addition, the material is weighed before and/or after each test. 

The transport system has the capability of either Batch or Non-Purge conveying, with or without our patented Air Assist “Multi-Zone Pressure Control.” 

Air Assist units are installed after each bend and approximately every 20 feet. The number of Air Assist units to be used, is determined at the time of testing.  Our System Pressure Control will regulate the convey air pressure for the entire system through the pilot air regulators which are located at each air entry point. Airflow is controlled with a manual metering valve at each of these locations. 

DENSE PHASE CONVEYING with AIR PAD BOTTOM TRANSPORTER

The test material is manually loaded into a 10 cubic foot transporter, which is complete with a 60° cone and a 10” diameter air pad.  The material is then conveyed to a 50 cubic foot receiving bin, which contains integral dust filter cartridge elements.  In addition, the material is weighed before and/or after each test. 

The transport system has the capability of either Batch or Non-Purge conveying, with or without our patented Air Assist “Multi-Zone Pressure Control.”

DENSE PHASE VACUUM CONVEYING

The test material is manually loaded into a 10 cubic foot feed hopper and transferred to a receiving bin. A vacuum blower with a variable speed frequency drive is used to control the airflow.  Changeable orifices and/or Air Assists are used to balance the system’s vacuum level, while programmable controls may be customized to accommodate specific test criteria.  The material is weighed before and/or after each test. 

DILUTE PHASE PRESSURE CONVEYING

The test material is manually loaded into a hopper, which feeds a 3" eductor or a rotary airlock.  A screw feeder may be used to feed the system. Airflow is adjusted to achieve the desired conveying velocity. The material is then conveyed to a 50 cu.ft. receiving bin complete with integral dust filter cartridge elements. In addition, the material is weighed before and/or after each test.  

DENSE PHASE MINI JET

The test material is manually loaded into a hopper which feeds a one (1) cubic foot capacity pressure vessel with an air pad bottom.  Air flow pressure and blow time are adjusted to achieve the desired convey criteria.  The material is conveyed to a 50 cubic foot receiving bin with integral dust filter cartridge elements. In addition, the material is weighed before and/or after each test.    

DILUTE PHASE VACUUM CONVEYING

 The test material is metered into a convey line adapter via a rotary airlock or screw feeder. A vacuum wand may also be utilized. Airflow will be adjusted to achieve the desired conveying velocity.  The material is then conveyed to a 50 cubic foot receiving bin complete with integral dust filter cartridge elements. In addition, the material is weighed before and/or after each test.  

PNEUMATIC BLENDING

Nol-Tec’s Model 244 Blending Cone, mounted on a bin complete with integral dust filter cartridge elements, offers the capability of blending up to a 25 cubic foot batch of powder and/or granular materials. Each blended batch may be sampled by either using a grain thief to collect a stratified sample throughout the entire bed depth of the batch or by pan sampling as the material is gravity discharged from the bin. The samples may be analyzed by Nol-Tec or returned to the customer for analysis. 

Colored chalk may be added to a blend recipe to enhance visual observation of the blend action. An optical brightener may also be added to aid visual inspection of stratified samples. The optical brightener reflects ultraviolet light. 

RETURN OF TEST MATERIAL

All test material will be returned to the customer “Freight Collect” unless other arrangements have been made in writing. A return destination address and contact name is required for all return shipments. Cleaning materials (used to scour the conveying line) and filter cartridges, which have become contaminated during testing, will be returned with the test material. Test materials shipped to Nol-Tec in bulk bags, boxes, bags, or tote bins will be returned to the customer in 55-gallon drums. NolTec cannot dispose of any test material under any circumstance. 

TESTING INVESTMENT

The standard rate for testing is $175/hour with a minimum charge of one 8-hour day.  A charge of $200 is required to replace the filter cartridges for each test performed. 

Additional costs may be applicable for “Special Conditions” such as the required use of nitrogen as the motive air, equipment modifications, shipping containers, special arrangements, etc.  

WITNESSING YOUR TEST

We welcome you to witness any material testing at our facility in Lino Lakes, MN (a suburb north of Minneapolis).  The costs of your travel and living expenses are your responsibility.  Our plant is located about 45 minutes from the MSP International airport.
